Faire's Guide to Getting Outside.

Haley Martin

In honor of Earth Day being April 19th, Faire has declared environmentalism as the theme of the month. So, when is a better time to come along with us as we tap into our inner Bear Grylls? Before we dig in, I must disclose that the Bear Grylls comparison is a bit of an exaggeration--for myself at least. I cannot tell a lie! (We are all about ethics at Faire.) I am not an “outdoorsy” person in the traditional sense. I do not enjoy camping, hunting, or any other activity that puts me outside 100 feet of a public bathroom. But, I still enjoy the outdoors like any other Austinite would--by going down to the watering hole! This is a routine task for anyone in The South. Temperatures are hitting the 90’s and Spring has only just started! Take along our guide to enjoy most quintessential ideal trip outside--to the river, to the park, or anywhere outside your humble abode!

1. Look Good

So, you think you have what it takes to step outside? Easy tiger! Check the temperature first! We have all forgotten to do this before. And likely, we have all been miserable outside in the least weather appropriate outfit. I’m talking tights, turtleneck, and beanie in 80 degree weather. Gearing up in an outfit that feels good, and looks good, can make or break your adventure. If you aren't sure about the weather, yoga wear is always a safe bet to stay cool, warm, or athleisurely stylish.

2. Pack & Prep Well

Step one complete: you are no longer naked. Now that you are legally ready to soak up the rays, let’s make sure you have everything you need. If you are planning on going to the park or river, don’t just shoot on out there! Your trip will be 10X more comfortable when you bring along everything you could want or need.

No need to go crazy on this step, but do consider Faire’s recommendations: water, sunscreen, blanket or towel, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bluetooth speaker. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen. Pack it all in a handy dandy tote bag.

3. Bring a Friend

The more, the merrier! Bring along your dudes, bros, gal pals, and furry friends! We all need some good exercise and Vitamin D, so why not soak up the sun together? Alternatively, pack your journal or a thrilling novel, because books are friends too.

4. Go somewhere fun!

It is the journey that is important, not the destination. But, going somewhere fun cannot hurt! Take a trek down to your local park, go out to a coffee shop, or just go on a stroll around town. No matter where you go, have an adventure! Take new paths, snap cute pictures, and just have fun!
